I checked out the supported USB wireless options, ordered one off the list from Amazon (I picked the NETGEAR A6200), and downloaded a free trial of Acrylic WiFi Pro to get started. I have therefore sent an email to acryllic to see whether they feel this could be the cause of my wireshark issue. This driver allows you to capture in promiscuous mode, so you can capture all that management frame goodness, but without the AirPcap adapter. Capture engine receives the packets from dumpcap and converts into human readable format.

I do however note that some acrylic NDIS drivers still appear in the list of interfaces when I use administrator mode so I assume that their uninstall script is not perfect. In order to capture the traffic Wireshark calls another function call as dumpcap.exe and this point where capture filters can be applied.
I uninstalled this software - and npcap, rebooted and reinstalled npcap - still no change. One of the other pcap based bits of software I use is Acryllic WiFi professional - it actually uses sharppcap I have also tried updating to the latest npcap (1.5.0) with no change. Finally solved my problem The Issue was down to having installed Acrylic WiFi professional with its NDIS drivers It installs a file called airpcap.dll under c:windowssystem32 - this was necessary when using winpcap but messes up npcap I simply started an admin shell and used 'rename airpcap. However given that there was clearly an issue I tried removing both, rebooting and reinstalling npcap - no change. I had both winpcap and npcap installed because winpcap was installed by some other software and it has never been an issue in the past. Npcap was NOT installed with the option to restrict access to administrator. I've tried manually removing npcap and re-running the wireshark installation so that npcap is re-installed: Interfaces ARE detected if I run as Administrator or if I uninstall npcap Its GUI has an older, simplistic look and feel. Like Acrylic WiFi, it also has a monitor or promiscuous mode to capture more traffic.

I suspect this happened after an update - I am using Wireshark 3.4.6 on Windows 10 20H2 with all updates Cain & Abel is a multi-purpose password recovery and cracking application that also features Wi-Fi stumbling, sniffing and cracking tools.
